European Hunt in Wisconsin: History, Tradition & Blonhaven Hunts

Oct 7
4 min read
During a European hunt there's that moment that changes everything and suddenly, the stillness of a hunt breaks.

A pheasant rises, then another and another. Someone calls out. Shotguns come to the shoulder, birds cross overhead and the quiet Wisconsin countryside comes alive just like that.

It’s a much different experience than walking a field behind a pointing dog. It’s faster, more social, and built around a hunting tradition that stretches back generations.

At Blonhaven Hunt Club in Orfordville, Wisconsin, European Hunts give you the chance to experience that tradition close to home. Located just 34 miles from Madison and 32 miles from Rockford, Blonhaven brings hunters together for a day that combines challenging shooting with the camaraderie that has always been part of upland hunting.

What Is a European Hunt?

A European hunt, sometimes called a European pheasant hunt or driven shoot, changes the way you encounter birds.

Instead of walking through cover in search of pheasants, hunters take assigned shooting positions while birds are released to create passing shots. Hunters rotate positions throughout the event, giving everyone different angles and opportunities.

The result is a quick-moving shooting experience that rewards focus, communication and good shotgun skills.

It also makes European Hunts especially enjoyable as a group. You spend the day sharing the action with other hunters, comparing shots, telling stories between rounds and taking part in something that feels as much like a gathering as a hunt.

The History Behind the European Hunt

Driven bird shooting is deeply routed in Europe. Pheasants had been hunted in Great Britain for centuries, but the style changed significantly during the 1800s. Earlier hunters commonly walked birds up over dogs. As firearms improved, driven shooting grew more popular.

According to Fieldsports Journal, the Continental practice known as battue, where game was moved toward waiting shooters, had reached prominent English estates by the 1820s.

Driven pheasant shooting became firmly established later in the 19th century.

Shooting UK also traces the growth of the tradition to European practices and notes that the development of breech-loading shotguns helped driven shooting expand.

The format evolved over time, but one part of the appeal remained remarkably consistent: people gathered outdoors to share a challenging day of shooting.

That sense of tradition feels right at home at Blonhaven.

A European Hunt at a Wisconsin Hunting Tradition

Blonhaven has a significant history of its own. Founded in 1953, Blonhaven is Wisconsin’s oldest continuous hunting preserve. The club began in Milton before moving to its current Orfordville location in 1999.

Today, more than 200 acres of sorghum, switchgrass and milo stretch across the rolling hills of Spring Valley. The property includes nine private hunting fields, and its 4.5-mile perimeter is secured with four-foot woven wire fencing.

Those details matter when you hunt here. The grounds were developed specifically for upland game, with cover designed to stand up to changing Wisconsin conditions throughout the season.

Blonhaven also welcomes ringneck pheasant, Hungarian partridge and chukar hunters. No hunting license is required at the preserve, including for out-of-state visitors.

Why European Pheasant Hunts Are Worth Experiencing

Every style of bird hunting tests you differently. Walked-up upland hunting asks you to read cover, follow dogs, move carefully through the field and stay ready for a flush. A European pheasant hunt puts more emphasis on your ability to track moving birds and react to changing presentations.

Then there is the atmosphere.

European Hunts bring a group together around one shared experience. That makes them a natural fit for hunting buddies, families, clients, coworkers or anyone who wants to spend a memorable day outdoors.

For hunters searching for pheasant hunting in Wisconsin or a hunt club near Madison, WI, Blonhaven also offers a convenient location without losing the feeling of getting away. Madison is about 34 miles away, Rockford is 32 miles away, and Milwaukee is roughly 90 miles from the club.

You can leave the city behind and be standing in upland country sooner than you might think.
